About

Most consultants have read about running a business.

I've actually done it. I owned and ran a company for ten years, through rapid growth, a pandemic, serious financial trouble, and a hard-won turnaround to a successful exit. I know what your week feels like because I've lived it.

James Robertson, Principal Consultant
My story

An operator, not a career consultant.

For ten years I owned and ran a company through one of the most challenging stretches in recent memory. Major restructuring, rapid growth, big shifts in the industry, a pandemic, contraction, serious financial trouble, clawing the lost ground back, and out the other side to a successful exit. I'd argue I saw more in those ten years than a lot of owners see in twenty.

I know what it's like to lose sleep over payroll. To have a leadership team that nods in the meeting and then goes and does its own thing. To want the business to be better, to know it could be, and to not know how to get there. I lived all of it, and I came through it the hard way: my own education, bringing in the right people, making plenty of mistakes and learning from them, and leaning on good outside advisors when I needed them.

It wasn't the first time, either. Before I owned my own company, I helped grow a previous employer's business from three employees to thirty, as its operations leader and part of the leadership team. I wasn't the owner that time, though I did hold equity, but I was right in it, hands on across every part of the business.

Along the way I also spent years in a peer group of business owners, learning from and helping dozens of others work through their own hard problems. I've watched a lot of owners face a lot of different challenges first hand, and been part of getting them through.

What I do now

I help owners build the business they know they could have.

I help owners build the strategy, structure, and habits that turn a business that depends on them into one that runs and grows on its own. Not from a textbook, and not from a framework I invented and slapped my name on. I bring what actually works, learned from people far smarter than me and tested in my own company through the worst of it, and I make it fit your business.

The point isn't structure for its own sake. It's a business that makes more money, through leaner operations and real growth, and is worth more because of it. A better place to work for the people in it, and a lighter, better job for the owner who built it. A real return on the time and money you put in, whether you sell one day or simply run it well for years to come.

What I work by

A few things I won't compromise on.

Education

I'm here to teach a better way of running a business, not to keep the knowledge to myself. The goal is owners and teams more capable than when I found them.

Giving

I lead with my time and expertise to make the client better off. Success is measured by what the business gains, not by how dependent it becomes on me.

Integrity

I work by the same principles I teach, and I hold myself to the standards, structure, and honesty I ask of the businesses I work with.

If that's the kind of person you want in your corner, let's talk.

A discovery call is straight talk about what's going on and whether I can help. No pitch, no obligation.
